While it is not Monday, this entry is about Monday for the most part. Plus, it's the Tuesday after a long weekend, so it's like a Monday. Plus, the Law Center is on an "administrative Monday" so there.
First, let me say that I am able to type this now with no fear of missing class because my 9 a.m. class was canceled this morning. At 8:40. So I had already gotten up at 7 (or, at least, that's when my alarm went off), out the door by 8, and made it across town completely when I got the news. I'm sorry that it's a family crisis (and I hope everything's okay), but the timing could have been better...
Anyway, yesterday was a nice day. I had mostly finished the paper due today, so all that was left was filling out the footnotes and a bit of stylistic tweaking. Which meant there was plenty of time for GARDENING!!
manikitty went with me to the garden store, because I need a chaperone. I love green and flowering things, so it's hard for me to resist buying them. But we went with a specific list, and he was there to keep me on track.
The main goal was to get a pot and soil for my new
butterfly amaryllis bulb, but also to look into getting some herbs, new mums and possibly some other fall/winter blooming plants. We succeeded! Mariposa (Spanish for butterfly) is well planted in a beautiful new pot!
And then we actually have herbs growing! We have a little EU--Greek Basil, English something or other, and French Tarragon. We made sure not to plant the English and French plants next to each other... :)
I also got some snips to do some pruning, and then I braved the backyard vampires to go take care of our tomato plants. I thought I could handle it, but when I noticed after about 5 minutes that I had 16 bites on ONE leg, I had to go practically bathe in mosquito repellent.
I was able to get rid of the dead or dying branches of the tomato plants, but unfortunately I learned the hard way that not keeping up with the plants and letting them grow every which way for so long has very sad consequences. Some of the vines have grown too large to support their own weight (and the lack of water for most of the summer hasn't helped that!), so there were some casualties of flowering branches as I attempted to untangle and sort out the plants. And the tomato that was already growing just fell off, so we have a small green tomato now and fewer flowers. :( But some of the remaining flowers look promising, and at the rate we're going we won't get a frost until February, so we could have fresh, garden-grown tomatoes for a very long time!
